Drivers who wait at Bonnie Brae Street and University Drive will soon be part of a test. Denton Traffic Operations staff plan to pilot giving northbound and southbound Bonnie Brae their own separate signal phases at the intersection, according to the city manager's Oct. 2 Friday Staff Report to the City Council.

The change follows resident concerns that Council Member Rumohr passed along on Sept. 28. Southbound Bonnie Brae is down to a single lane through the construction zone, yet it has been getting its green turn signal at the same moment as northbound traffic.

Staff wrote that they had switched the signal to permissive movements because of the active road work, and that they will now evaluate how the split phases perform.

Closures on the calendar

The report's street closure list, exported Oct. 1, shows the main Bonnie Brae work scheduled to wrap up Oct. 10:

  • A full closure of Bonnie Brae from Riney Road/Bronco Way to Elm Street (US 77), where the contractor is building new concrete southbound lanes.
  • A lane closure from University Drive to Carril Al Lago Drive for removal of the old southbound lanes, plus rolling closures along the whole stretch to Elm Street.
  • A full closure of Carril Al Lago Drive between Aurora Lane and Bonnie Brae while the intersection and median are rebuilt.

Two Windsor Drive lane closures west of Bonnie Brae were listed as completed Oct. 1. A separate Windsor lane closure between Bonnie Brae and Westgate Drive for a water tap runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is listed through Oct. 23. Elsewhere, the full closure of West Highland Street between Welch and Bernard streets for reconstruction is scheduled to end Monday, Oct. 5.

Pickup line at Hodge Elementary

The same report answers a Sept. 22 resident question about the afternoon pickup line at Hodge Elementary spilling onto Deerwood Road and Kings Row toward Loop 288. Transportation staff who watched dismissal found cars lining up from 2:15 p.m. for a 3 p.m. release and the line lasting until about 3:20 p.m.

The queue did not reach Loop 288 that day, but staff warned that a late pickup or cars blocking travel lanes could back traffic onto the Loop 288 main lanes. School staff told the city they had not known about that risk. The city plans another afternoon visit and may raise a staggered dismissal with the school if it is workable.

Residents who see a flooded public road can report it to Denton 311 by dialing 3-1-1 from a mobile phone or (940) 349-7311 from a landline; the city asks people to call 911 if the flooding looks like an emergency.
