Dominant First Half Sets Tone

Houston Cougars quarterback Conner Weigman orchestrated a decisive offensive performance on Saturday, throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for two more to lead the visiting team to a 42-28 victory over Georgia Southern. The win improves Houston’s record to 3-1, while the Eagles drop to 1-3 in their home opener at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.

Weigman established control early, scoring on a 5-yard run in the first quarter to give Houston a 7-0 lead. He followed that with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Koby Young, extending the advantage to 14-0 before Georgia Southern could respond. The Eagles’ offense struggled to generate momentum against Houston’s defense, remaining scoreless until the second quarter.

Eagles Fight Back in Second Quarter

Georgia Southern finally broke through late in the first half when Max Johnson connected with Alex Taylor on a 40-yard pass. Tripp Bryant’s extra point made it 14-7. The Eagles quickly tied the game later in the period when Ty Cummings rushed for a 2-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 14-14.

However, Houston answered immediately as Weigman scored on a 1-yard run to reclaim the lead, 21-14. The Cougars did not trail again after that point. Weigman capped the half with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Traville Frederick Jr., pushing the margin to 28-14 at halftime.

Consistent Scoring in Second Half

Houston maintained its offensive rhythm in the second half. Weigman connected with Trent Walker on a 23-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter, increasing the lead to 35-14. Georgia Southern continued to show flashes of life, with Johnson finding Taylor again for a 23-yard score to make it 35-21.

The fourth quarter saw both teams trade touchdowns. Weigman found Amare Thomas on an 11-yard pass to extend Houston’s lead to 42-21. The Eagles responded with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to River Helms, finalizing the 42-28 score.

Key Performances and Records

While Weigman was the standout player for Houston, running back Re’Shaun Sanford II contributed significantly on the ground with 17 carries for 120 yards. Walker caught six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, providing a reliable target for the quarterback.

For Georgia Southern, Johnson completed 26 of 38 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns. Taylor led all receivers with six catches for 119 yards and two scores. David Mbadinga provided some ground support with 37 rushing yards on six attempts.

The game drew an attendance of 24,112 to the Statesboro venue. With this result, Houston moves to 3-1 on the season, while Georgia Southern falls to 1-3.
