Students in Denton ISD came to class a little less often in the first weeks of this school year than they did a year ago, according to an attendance report on the agenda for Tuesday's school board meeting.

The district's average daily attendance for its first reporting period, Aug. 13 through Sept. 18, was 95.83%. For the same stretch last school year it was 96.04%, the report says.

The district's summary notes that average daily attendance directly affects how much money Denton ISD receives from the state.

Campus by campus

Most schools slipped. Seven of the district's 26 elementary schools posted a better first-period rate than last year, with Sandbrock Ranch showing the biggest gain, 0.79 of a point, to 97.40%.

At the high school level, LaGrone Academy was the only campus to improve, rising to 96.38% from 96.09%. Braswell, Denton, Guyer and Ryan high schools all dipped:

  • Braswell: 93.81%, down from 94.53%
  • Denton: 94.81%, down from 95.01%
  • Guyer: 95.80%, down from 95.86%
  • Ryan: 94.49%, down from 94.86%

Letters, home visits and court

The report also counts the steps campuses took on truancy between Aug. 13 and Sept. 15. Across the district, schools sent 3,295 warning letters, made 3,039 direct contacts with parents, set up 297 attendance behavior plans and made 102 home visits.

Campuses filed 44 truancy cases in court in that period, 34 of them from high schools. Braswell, Denton and Ryan high schools each filed 11. Braswell also sent the most warning letters of any campus, 890.

The attendance report is listed as a report item, with no vote attached, for the board's 6 p.m. meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The same agenda includes a workshop on renewing the district's District of Innovation plan and votes on campus and district improvement plans.
