Dallas is about 35 miles southeast of Denton. Flight disruptions at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field increased Monday after an outage at a Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control facility in Philadelphia. FlightAware recorded hundreds of cancellations at DFW, while departing flights were running about 49 minutes late and delays were rising.
The Philadelphia center manages traffic involving Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark, with interruptions also reported in Philadelphia and the New York area. Airports around the country were affected, and the same facility was associated with significant disruptions at Newark Liberty International Airport in spring 2025.
The FAA said its main data connection failed Monday morning. An attempt to use the backup connection revealed that a fiber-optic cable had been cut. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy attributed the damage to an Amtrak construction crew.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency was installing another circuit as repairs proceeded, while Verizon technicians worked on restoring service. Bedford said fixing the fiber could require about 13 hours, though the replacement circuit could bring back the main connection sooner. That connection had already been slated for replacement under a national air traffic control modernization effort.
By early afternoon, some service had resumed at LaGuardia, Kennedy and Philadelphia, but major delays were expected through the rest of the day. Several airlines allowed fee-free flight changes, and the FAA told travelers to check with their airline before heading to the airport. The FAA also started testing an artificial-intelligence system in the Washington, D.C., area to help identify scheduling conflicts and weather issues.
