Denton High School and Ryan High School will face each other on Friday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex for the 25th meeting of their football rivalry, known as the Battle of the Volt.
The series began in 1996 with a 37-0 victory for Denton. Ryan secured its first win in 1997 with a 19-9 score. The Broncos won the next two matchups in 1998 and 1999 before Ryan claimed another victory in 2000.
Ryan has dominated the recent history of the series, winning 20 consecutive games by margins of at least 17 points. The Raiders lead the all-time series 21-3. The teams did not play against each other from 2012 through 2015, nor in 2022 or 2023.
The name Battle of the Volt originated from a contest held when Denton High reopened after renovations. A winner proposed a trophy depicting helmets smashing together to create an electrical charge, which became the basis for the rivalry's moniker and the associated trophy.
Ryan enters Friday’s game with a 1-2 record. The Raiders opened the season with a 30-27 win over Northwest Eaton before suffering losses to Mansfield Timberview and Lewisville. They had a bye week last week.
