Denton will welcome its first Texas Health Behavioral Health Center in October, a facility designed to provide local mental health resources while honoring the legacy of former mayor Mark Burroughs. The center will be located at 2660 Scripture St., Suite 120, marking the 19th outpatient behavioral health site for the organization in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
Burroughs served as Denton’s mayor from 2008 to 2014 and previously held positions on the City Council and as president of the Denton Rotary Club. He was also active with the Denton Chamber of Commerce, Greater Denton Arts Council, Denton County Transportation Authority, and the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival.
Following his unexpected death in 2024, a group known as the Friends of Mark, including former council member Paul Meltzer, Mary Ann McDuff, and Randy Robinson, organized to establish this tribute.
The new clinic will initially offer group therapy for adults, with plans to eventually include services for adolescents. Scott Domingue, who serves as both chief operating officer and chief nursing officer for Texas Health, stated that the facility will also provide free psychiatric assessments.
He noted that while group therapy can seem intimidating to some, it often creates a supportive environment where patients find relief from anxiety and depression more effectively than other methods.
During a gathering at GreenHouse Restaurant, Mark Burroughs Jr. spoke about his family’s intention to keep their father’s memory active through service rather than static remembrance. The Friends of Mark are currently raising $150,000 for the Texas Health Resources Foundation. These funds will support free mental health assessments, intensive therapy for specific clients, and ensure the location is accessible via public transit.
