Denton police officers made two separate arrests on suspicion of driving while intoxicated following crashes that occurred on Wednesday. The incidents involved a 28-year-old male and a 41-year-old male, both of whom were taken into custody and booked into the city jail.
The first collision took place near North Elm Street and Brentwood Drive shortly before 11:03 p.m. Officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run accident. According to the police report, the 28-year-old driver side-swiped another vehicle after drifting into an adjacent lane.
The other driver followed the suspect, flashing high beams, until he struck a light pole. The suspect’s wife arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. Officers noted that the man had cuts on his face, arms, and legs, spoke with slurred speech, and appeared unsteady.
He also displayed argumentative behavior toward law enforcement. The suspect refused to provide a voluntary blood sample, leading officers to obtain a warrant for collection. Police spokesperson Lacy Fenn stated it was not yet clear if the hit-and-run aspect of the incident remains under investigation.
The second incident occurred around 2:26 p.m. on the northbound Interstate 35 service road near West Oak Street. Officers found the 41-year-old driver sitting on a curb between two damaged vehicles. His car sustained severe front-end damage, while the other vehicle had moderate side damage.
Medics reported that the driver admitted to consuming excessive alcohol before the crash. He told officers he attempted to turn into the intersection and struck the other car, whose driver was not injured. A search of the suspect’s vehicle revealed nine empty cardboard alcohol containers and a tenth container that still held liquid.
