The Texas Transportation Commission approved $555,410,992 in new funding for improvements along the I-35W corridor during its Aug. 26 meeting. The money was included in the 2027 Unified Transportation Program and will be used to construct frontage roads and full interchanges in southern Denton County.
Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027, with the exact schedule for each section dependent on utility relocations. Denton County will contribute $20 million to help expedite those relocations. The projects are slated for completion by 2036, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
The funded work includes building frontage roads from south of FM 1171 to north of John Paine Road/Allred Road, just south of Denton. Full interchanges will also be constructed at FM 1171, Denton Creek Drive, FM 407, Old Justin Road, Robson Ranch Road/Crawford Road, and John Paine Road/Allred Road.
Denton County Judge Andy Eads stated, “We are eager to see how these much-needed improvements will become a reality.” He noted that the funding was secured after more than a year of negotiations involving the Texas Department of Transportation, the Regional Transportation Council, and the county.
Eads also credited TxDOT commissioners Robbie Vaughan and Steve Alvis, as well as Texas Senate Transportation Chair Tan Parker, for their assistance.
