The Guyer Wildcats will host the Wakeland Wolverines Thursday night at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex in Denton. The contest marks the opening week of district play for both squads in the Texas UIL Class 6A Region I District 5 standings. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central Time.
Both teams enter the game with identical 2-1 records after sitting out the previous week. Guyer secured its first victory of the season with a 45-20 win over Rockwall-Heath, followed by a 27-9 decision against Melissa. The Wildcats then suffered their first defeat of the year in a 44-30 loss to the Waxahachie Indians on the same field.
Wakeland began its campaign with a 42-7 loss to Richland. The Wolverines responded with consecutive wins, defeating Northwest 27-21 and Rowlett 39-36. Because both programs were idle last week, they arrive at the matchup well-rested with an opportunity to establish an early lead in the district standings.
Guyer is currently tied for the No. 23 spot in the High School On SI Texas Top 25, while other selectors have placed the Wildcats as high as the top 10 in the state. The team features four ranked senior prospects, including four-star defensive lineman Zane Rowe, who is committed to Oregon.
Three-star linemen Darrien Neal and Khyren Haywood, along with safety Paxton Williams, round out the group of highly rated seniors. Junior quarterback Carter Morgan and defensive lineman Logan Lokey are also listed as three-star prospects.
