Hawks' bench powers comeback past Spurs, 123-116, in preseason

Asa Newell and Kingston Flemings sparked Atlanta off the bench as the Hawks erased a 19-point deficit to beat the Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday.

San Antonio built a big early lead, but Atlanta's reserves took over late as the Hawks beat the Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday night at Frost Bank Center.

The Spurs led 39-20 after the first quarter and still held a 69-62 edge at the half after the Hawks won the second quarter 42-30. San Antonio carried a 95-93 lead into the fourth quarter, where Atlanta pulled away with a 30-21 period.

Asa Newell came off the Hawks' bench for 16 points in 14 minutes, hitting 5 of 8 field goals and 5 of 6 free throws. Atlanta was plus-21 with him on the court. Kingston Flemings, also a reserve, had 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting with five assists and three steals. Dyson Daniels pulled down 11 rebounds to go with 13 points.

Dylan Harper paced San Antonio with 16 points, making 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and dished four assists. Stephon Castle and David Jones Garcia scored 14 points apiece, Devin Vassell added 12 and Victor Wembanyama had nine points and six rebounds in 17 minutes.

It was San Antonio's preseason opener; Atlanta is 1-1 in exhibition play. Attendance was 18,354.
