Malik Davis' season is over after a hip injury suffered during Friday's practice, the Cowboys said. He underwent surgery later that night and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. The injury happened during a non-contact outdoor workout at The Star in Frisco that was only slightly more involved than a walk-through. Davis was removed from the field by cart.
Davis had won the backup role behind Javonte Williams after competing for it through most of August. He had a strong training camp and preseason, and the Cowboys expected him to contribute Sunday against the Giants. Stephen Jones, the team's chief operating officer, told 105.3 The Fan that the injury was disappointing for Davis and the team.
Jones said Davis had earned the position through his work and that other players would have to take on the role.
The Cowboys added veteran Emari Demercado for depth and special teams. Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, also could get more work. The team could elevate him for the game or place him on the active roster.
Davis backed up Williams last season, gaining 252 yards and scoring two touchdowns. He joined Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2022, appeared in 12 games as a rookie and rushed for 161 yards. After two seasons on the practice squad, he returned to training camp last year, made the roster and totaled 103 rushing yards, his only career game above 100 yards.
