The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday that SMU senior Enzo Panozzo and Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly are sharing its weekly defensive honor. The recognition followed SMU’s 1-0 win over NC State, in which Panozzo scored the only goal.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, captained the Mustangs’ defense in their ACC home opener. NC State managed eight shots, with two reaching the target, as SMU posted its fifth shutout this season. SMU Athletics reported the selection is Panozzo’s first weekly award from the conference, while it marks the Mustangs’ second ACC weekly honor this season.
The victory moved SMU to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Mustangs have a 7-0-1 record and are unbeaten at 2-0-0 in ACC competition. Their next conference match is scheduled for Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
