Houston Texans cornerback Jaylin Smith’s penalty for an unauthorized shoe logo was cut to $6,223 from $7,779 after an appeal. The logo was visible during warmups at a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, though the available report does not identify it.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported the decision on Sept. 12, before Houston’s regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills. The NFL characterized the incident as Smith’s first offense and said he had an opportunity to correct the uniform issue, but determined that a reduced fine was still appropriate.
The league’s listed amount for a first uniform violation involving socks, jerseys or undergarments is $5,971. A first violation involving an unauthorized logo or intellectual property can result in a penalty of as much as $11,941.
Smith might qualify for reimbursement under a policy the NFL Players Association announced in August. Under that policy, a player with one offense in a qualifying category may receive the entire fine back after the season. The NFLPA did not specify those categories.
Because the incident took place on the playing surface during warmups, it could be covered as on-field conduct, but the policy’s application to Smith’s fine remains unclear. He would have to avoid another applicable violation during the rest of the 2026 regular season.
