C.J. Stroud is seeking an average of $60 million on a contract extension, while the Houston Texans are offering $50 million, according to a report from fansided.com. Houston has exercised Stroud’s fifth-year option, keeping him signed through the 2027 season.
The Texans have said they would wait until next offseason to pursue an extension if no agreement is reached before Week 1. Houston is scheduled to open its season at 1 p.m. Sunday. The report also points to Dak Prescott reaching an agreement with the Dallas Cowboys shortly before their 2024 opener as evidence that a deal could still come late.
Stroud threw for 4,105 yards with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions as a rookie. He topped 3,000 passing yards in each of the next two seasons, but did not reach 20 touchdown passes in either and had more interceptions than in his first year.
The report compares the talks with Baker Mayfield’s negotiations before he agreed to a three-year, $55 million-per-year contract with Tampa Bay. Stroud’s recent playoff losses to Pittsburgh and New England, Tank Dell’s injury history, offensive-line problems and the Texans’ running game are also cited.
