Dusty May's first Mavericks training camp will not include anyone who coached beside Jason Kidd in Dallas last season. That is the upshot of Friday's Dallas Morning News report that player-development assistant Phil Handy is finalizing a move to the Philadelphia 76ers under Nick Nurse, according to ESPN's Marc J. Spears.
Handy had been the final Kidd-era holdover on the Dallas staff. Sports Illustrated likewise stressed his status as the last remaining link to Kidd's coaching group and called the loss significant for a franchise still restocking its bench.
A clean break, name by name
Before Handy's reported exit, the Morning News listed the assistants already gone in the May rebuild, including Frank Vogel, Jay Triano, and other Kidd-era aides who departed as Dallas remade the staff. Handy's move finishes that sequence: the last holdover is leaving as September camp approaches.
May's reported staff, per the Morning News, has included Willie Green, Joe Boylan, Garrett Temple, Drew Williamson, and Mody Maor among the new names around the head coach. Rosters of assistants can still adjust before camp opens, but the continuity question is settled — May's hires will own the sideline without a leftover bridge to the prior regime.
What Handy did in Dallas
The Morning News described Handy as a player-development coach with ties to Kyrie Irving and Max Christie and a focus on ball-handling and shooting work. Even in one season, that seat mattered because it sat between the previous staff's habits and May's first camp.
Sports Illustrated's coverage treated the departure as more than a routine aide shuffle: when the last holdover leaves, the new coach owns the bench completely.
