The Denton Fire Department has finished a five-year strategic plan meant to keep its service in step with a fast-growing city, according to the city manager's Friday staff report to the City Council.
The 2026-2030 plan grew out of input from department members, an outside stakeholder group and the city's 2026 Community Survey. It lays out five goals:
- Improve how fire and EMS response is delivered
- Put the safety and wellness of firefighters first
- Manage capacity and resources as the city grows
- Expand community risk reduction
- Recruit, develop and retain a strong workforce
Each goal comes with measurable objectives, a named lead and a target date, the report said. Department leaders will review progress every quarter and again once a year.
Station 10 and response times
Among the examples the city listed are opening Fire Station 10 at Landmark, working toward compliance with NFPA 1710, the National Fire Protection Association standard for career departments' response times, and preparing for reaccreditation by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International in 2028.
Station 10 will serve southwest Denton, including Landmark, the master-planned community Hillwood is building north of Robson Ranch Road, and the Robson Ranch retirement community. The city has said the station should open by September 2028 and will reuse the floor plan from the rebuilt Stations 5 and 6. Hillwood agreed to reimburse the city $5 million for public safety in the area.
