The Forge Makerspace at the Denton Public Library is open again after a temporary shutdown in September, with a new weekly schedule, according to a staff report posted Tuesday for the Library Board.

The space reopened during the first week of October. Its hours are now:

  • Tuesdays, 5 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Thursdays, noon to 4 p.m.
  • Saturdays, 1 to 5 p.m.

The report, from Director of Libraries Jennifer Bekker, does not say why the makerspace closed.

A bookstore gift for early readers

The Plot Twist, a local bookstore, held a fundraiser in honor of Dolly Parton and matched what it raised. The store is donating $1,048 to the library, which plans to spend it on materials and toys for its Discovery Kits. Those kits support the library's 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, and the report says they celebrate Parton's legacy in early literacy.

New scanner, new fee schedule

Special Collections at the Emily Fowler Central Library now has an overhead book scanner. Staff say it lets fragile documents lie open without pressure on the spine while still producing high-quality scans.

The City Council approved the library's 2026-27 fee schedule on Sept. 22, and the fiscal year began Oct. 1. According to the report, the only changes set Discovery Kit replacement charges and miscellaneous makerspace material charges at the library's actual cost.

Other charges in the schedule include 3D printing at 20 cents per gram, lamination at 50 cents per linear foot and a nonresident library card at $50 a year or $25 for six months.

Halloween at the branches

All three branches have put up what the report calls not-too-spooky decorations. Halloween programs can be found on the library's online calendar using its Halloween filter, and staff have built reading lists searchable in the catalog under "Denton Halloween." The library is also a stop on the citywide Skelly Hunt and is sending staff to the Hallo-Wing event at Denton Municipal Airport.

The Library Board takes up the report at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in the meeting room at the South Branch Library, 3228 Teasley Lane. Board members will also see results of a Texas Library Association study that estimates every dollar Texas libraries spend produces $4.74 in statewide economic activity.

The Friends of the Denton Public Libraries' next Big Book Sale is Saturday, Nov. 14, with a members-only presale Friday, Nov. 13.
