The pumpkins will have to wait a week.

The City of Denton moved its Blocktober Party and Pumpkin Drop, the free evening event meant to open the city's month of Halloween programming on Oct. 1, to Thursday, Oct. 8, after rain soaked North Texas. The city announced the change on social media, and its event page now lists the new date.

The party runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Quakertown Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. Admission is free and no registration is required. The Denton Record-Chronicle reported that the pumpkin drop itself is set for 7 p.m.

What is planned

According to the city, the evening includes:

  • pumpkins dropped from height, with the Record-Chronicle reporting they will be filled with treats
  • bounce houses and lawn games
  • a touch-a-truck display of city vehicles
  • booths from city departments with interactive games
  • a chance to meet police officers, firefighters and council members
  • food trucks, with food available for purchase

The Record-Chronicle listed Groovy Chicken & Waffles, So Forkin Good BBQ, DonutNV, Kona Ice, Brooklyn Dawgs and Chug It among the vendors. Free and paid parking lots are available downtown.

The rest of the month

The postponement does not change the larger calendar. The city says more than 400 free and low-cost events are scheduled through Nov. 1 as part of 31 Days of Denton Halloween, including the Hallo-Wing aircraft trunk-or-treat on Oct. 17, the Day of the Dead Festival and coffin races on Oct. 24, and downtown trick-or-treating on Oct. 31 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The Texas Legislature has designated Denton the Halloween Capital of Texas through 2035.

The full schedule is posted at dentonhalloween.com. Questions about the Blocktober Party can go to the city at 940-349-7311.
