Retro game and card shop Overworld Collectibles opens on North Elm with a free play lounge

Owner Joey Ramirez, who co-owned the pandemic-era shop Freaks and Geeks, is running the new store in soft-opening mode, with weekly Super Smash Bros. meetups and couches for drop-in gaming.

A new shop for retro video games, trading cards and pop culture memorabilia has opened on North Elm Street in Denton, and its owner says he wants it to double as a hangout.

Overworld Collectibles buys, sells and trades games, cards and other collectibles, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported Friday. The store has been in a soft-opening phase since Sept. 12 while owner Joey Ramirez prices inventory and plans events, and he told the paper he has not set a date for a formal grand opening because he is running the business alone.

A second try after the pandemic

Ramirez previously co-owned Freaks and Geeks, a Denton collectibles shop that closed a few months into the COVID-19 pandemic. He took another job after that and kept collecting. Ramirez told the Record-Chronicle that about 90% of what is on the shelves at Overworld came from his own collection.

He also works at Free Play Denton, the retro arcade on the Square, to support himself while the store gets going, and said he puts the shop's earnings back into inventory rather than paying himself. Because of that second job, Overworld is open about half the week, with late hours so people have somewhere to spend an evening.

Couches, consoles and meetups

At the back of the store, a television hooked up to several game consoles sits among couches, open to anyone who wants to play. Ramirez told the paper the area earns him nothing.

The shop already hosts a weekly Super Smash Bros. meetup, and Ramirez said he hopes to add daily events, including gatherings built around oddball hardware such as Nintendo's Virtual Boy.

He described his pricing approach as aimed at people who collect for fun, saying he will work with a customer who is short on cash to finish a set. As a Pokemon card collector himself, he offers full value in store credit for any Meowth card he does not already own.

"The most important thing to me is building a sense of community," Ramirez told the Record-Chronicle.
