Two students at Guyer High School were taken into custody Friday, Oct. 2, after a firearm turned up in a backpack on campus, Denton ISD and Denton police said.

According to the district, the episode began when students told campus administrators that a classmate had said something about a gun. The school resource officer and administrators began looking into the report right away, and that inquiry led them to a second student, whose backpack held a gun. The district said that student was arrested without incident.

Denton police said one of the two students is a juvenile, who was taken into custody, and the other is an adult, who was arrested. Neither police nor the district has released the students' names or the specific charges. The district said both face discipline under its student code of conduct and could face criminal charges. An arrest is not a finding of guilt.

Denton ISD said no known threats were made toward students or staff, and no injuries were reported.

In a statement, the district thanked the students who spoke up and credited the school resource officer and campus staff, calling their response "swift and decisive."
