College basketball comes to the Denton Square on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University teams hold the Nightmare on Elm Street tip-off downtown.

The event puts all three of the city's college basketball programs in front of fans and residents before their seasons begin, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported Monday. TWU's team opens the night at 6 p.m., the two UNT teams follow, and the Mean Green men are scheduled for 7 p.m.

This is the third year for the event, which the paper says draws hundreds of UNT and TWU fans downtown each fall; last year it put a court on the Square.

Where the teams stand

UNT men: Coach Daniyal Robinson's first season ended 19-14 with a largely rebuilt roster. This year the Mean Green have junior guard Je'Shawn Stevenson, the American Conference's preseason player of the year, though league coaches picked UNT to finish seventh. In an exhibition at Colorado, UNT lost 67-64; point guard Cash Chavis, a transfer from UT-Arlington, scored 17 in his first game with the team.

TWU: The Pioneers went 31-2 last season and reached the South Central Regional final of the Division II NCAA Tournament, where they lost at the buzzer to Colorado Mesa. Their top three scorers are gone, and the team will lean on senior guard Madi Lumsden, a former Argyle player who averaged 10.2 points. TWU is picked to repeat as Lone Star Conference champion.

UNT women: Jason Burton's team finished 19-14 and missed the postseason for the first time in three years. Returning guards Chania Price and Cherie Spencer, who averaged 6.3 and 5.2 points, are expected to anchor the rebuild. American coaches picked UNT sixth.
