Two of Denton's longer-running advisory groups would go away Tuesday under resolutions placed on the City Council's consent agenda, part of a review of how the city runs its boards and commissions.
The first would end the Community Partnership Committee, the panel that has reviewed requests for hotel occupancy tax and city sponsorship money and recommended who gets it. It began as the Hotel Occupancy Tax and Sponsorship Committee and took its current name in 2020, according to the resolution.
If the council approves, the full council would take over deciding the funding the committee used to handle, the city secretary's office wrote in its agenda summary. A council work session on the hotel tax and sponsorship funding processes is scheduled for early 2027.
The second resolution would end the Committee on the Environment, which was set up by resolution to study environmental questions and advise the council on them.
How it got here
Staff trace both proposals to September 2025, when Council Member Jill Jester suggested uniform terms for board members and simpler procedures across the city's boards. Staff published an informal report on possible changes in January 2026, and in July Mayor Pro Tem Nick Stevens added a proposal dealing with nominations, vacancies and absences.
At a Sept. 15 work session, the council directed staff to bring forward the two dissolutions, according to the agenda information sheets.
Same night: $1.96 million in hotel tax
Also on the consent agenda is the city's yearly hotel tax agreement with the Denton Destination Marketing and Management Organization. It would allow up to $1,964,250 in hotel occupancy tax revenue to be spent on tourism programming and events from Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2027, paid in quarterly installments.
Allocations depend on funding requests and on how much revenue comes in, the finance department wrote. The ordinance notes that the Community Partnership Committee reviewed and approved the agreement and amount before it reached the council.
