Firefighters in Denton County successfully contained a wildfire on Thursday afternoon that burned roughly five acres of land near Copper Canyon. The incident occurred around the area where Jernigan Road intersects with Chinn Chapel Road.
Denton County Emergency Services received initial reports of smoke at approximately 1:10 p.m. As crews arrived, additional calls from residents indicated active flames near the historic Chinn’s Chapel Cemetery. The situation was classified as a working fire, which led to a request for backup units from the Highland Village Fire Department.
The blaze consumed pastureland and encroached upon portions of the cemetery grounds. Officials confirmed that all nearby structures were protected during the operation, including a historic log cabin located in the vicinity. There were no reports of injuries among residents or emergency personnel.
Investigators have not yet determined what started the fire. The cause remains undetermined as officials continue their assessment of the scene.
