A Denton senior told police she lost more than $100,000 to scammers over roughly two weeks, from Sept. 28 to Oct. 9, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported from a police report. Police are investigating the theft.

It started with an alert on one of her devices warning of a fraudulent transaction on one of her accounts. The alert listed a phone number, and when she called it, a man gave his name and passed her along to someone else.

That second person allegedly told her $15,000 had already been taken from her business account, and that the theft could be stopped if she wired money into a secure account where it would be turned into gold bars.

According to the report, the caller kept phoning several times a day asking for more transfers. One of them, on Oct. 8, moved $130,000 into another bank account.

On Oct. 9, someone from the United States Gold Bureau reached the woman and told her she had been defrauded. She contacted the FBI, which told her to report the case to Denton police.

In the same weekend, from early Friday through late Sunday, Denton police responded to 1,180 calls for service and officer-initiated calls and made 36 arrests, the newspaper reported.
