Southern Denton County communities are organizing a series of events to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The schedule includes ceremonies, a memorial stair climb, and a blood drive designed to honor those who lost their lives and recognize first responders.
In Flower Mound, the Marcus High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is partnering with local fire and police departments and Lewisville ISD to host a ceremony at the school’s football stadium. The event begins at 9:11 a.m. and features remarks from AFJROTC representatives and elected officials, followed by a flag ceremony, the National Anthem, and Taps performed by the school band.
Denton residents can attend a ceremony at the Central Fire Station on 332 E. Hickory Street, which starts at 8 a.m. In Trophy Club, the Fire Department will hold a brief ceremony and moment of silence at 8:45 a.m. to honor the courage displayed during the attacks.
A memorial stair climb is scheduled for Friday at The Arena at Pecan Square in Northlake. The event, organized by Denton County Emergency Services District No. 1 and 2 Honor Guard, Northlake Police Department, and partners Hillwood and FirstServe Residential, begins with a color posting and an opening prayer by Northlake Police chaplain Pastor Matthew Harding.
Peter Malik, a volunteer firefighter and EMT, will perform the national anthem. Chief Ricky Vaughan will deliver remarks before the climb starts at 9:30 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m. Proceeds from the event support Building Homes for Heroes, an organization that provides mortgage-free homes and services to wounded veterans and first responders.
