The Dallas Cowboys are evaluating their defense after injuries to linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and safety Malik Hooker in the season-opening loss to the New York Giants. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said Overshown has a hamstring strain and is expected to miss one to two weeks, with the team hoping he returns in about two weeks.
He left after halftime and handles defensive communication between coaches and players.
Hooker will undergo surgery for a fractured forearm. Dallas does not intend to put him on injured reserve, which would keep him out for a minimum of four games. P.J. Locke is expected to replace him in the passing-down package, while Caleb Downs is slated to keep taking reps at safety and in the slot during those plays.
The Cowboys may use several linebackers in Overshown’s absence. Jaishawn Barham spent most of his snaps alongside Dee Winters against New York, and Shemar James also played some snaps. Schottenheimer said Winters is the most experienced option and mentioned practice-squad elevations such as veteran Curtis Robinson and Justin Barron.
Dallas’ defense gave up 28 points and 394 yards, allowed 165 rushing yards, forced one punt and surrendered nine third-down conversions on 11 attempts. Schottenheimer backed first-year coordinator Christian Parker and said he expects improvement from Parker and the team’s young players. No additional timetables were provided.
