Florida State coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles are preparing for Saturday’s game at No. 10 Alabama in Tuscaloosa while Bruce Warwick serves as interim athletic director. Michael Alford was fired as athletic director. Norvell praised Alford and his wife, Laura, and called Warwick an experienced professional. The players were off Monday, and Norvell planned to address the leadership change with them Tuesday.
Florida State, now 1-1, also faces several linebacker absences. Freshmen Izayia Williams and Daylen Green will miss the rest of the season. Blake Nichelson, a veteran linebacker, is expected back this year but will be sidelined for an extended period. Norvell said those openings could give other players chances on defense and special teams.
Norvell called the SMU defeat disappointing but said it did not reduce his confidence in the team. He cited quarterback Ashton Daniels’ work during the week, including his practice approach and focus on controllable areas. Norvell said Alabama’s defense is fast and explosive, with a bigger front than last season.
Florida State will need to win individual matchups, maintain offensive balance and create big plays. He also pointed to Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell’s ability to run outside the pocket. The Seminoles intend to use lessons from the SMU game against Alabama.
