Denton ISD launches Honor Card for free admission at school events

Denton ISD began issuing Honor Cards on Monday, Sept. 14, offering eligible veterans and active-duty service members complimentary general admission to most home athletic contests and fine arts performances, the district announced.

According to Denton ISD, the new Honor Card Program is meant to thank veterans and active-duty service members by welcoming them to district events at no charge. Cards are free, non-transferable and issued one per person. Holders must present the card at the event entrance for complimentary general admission.

Who qualifies

Denton ISD said applicants are eligible if they are an active-duty service member or veteran and either live within Denton ISD boundaries or are a family member of a Denton ISD student, regardless of where they live.

To pick up a card, the district asks applicants to bring a valid photo ID showing name, date of birth and home address, plus proof of military service such as a military ID, a Texas driver’s license with the VETERAN designation, a DD-214 or a VA-issued veteran ID card. Applicants complete a brief form during the visit.

What the card covers

Denton ISD said the Honor Card provides complimentary general admission to regular-season home games hosted at district campuses and facilities, including football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball and other sports. It also covers most student fine arts performances at district facilities, including band, choir and orchestra concerts, theater productions and dance showcases, with some exclusions tied to the event or seating capacity.

The district said the card may not be honored at UIL playoff games, tournaments, invitational events, sold-out performances, or events hosted by outside parties at district facilities, because postseason contests are governed by agreements beyond Denton ISD’s control.

Where to get one

Honor Cards are available beginning Sept. 14 at Denton ISD Central Offices in the Stephens Building, 1307 N. Locust St., Denton, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the district.

Superintendent Dr. Susannah O’Bara said in the district announcement that service is something Denton ISD talks about in classrooms and that it “lands differently when students can see it in the people around them.” Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Nick Petito said the district wanted the process to be simple and the welcome unmistakable.
